The roads have been constantly improving in Costa Rica, but we usually rent a small 4x4 so we can pretty much go anywhere. Depending on where you are going, you may not necessarily need one. The roads can be a bit rough so we generally take out the max coverage so we don’t have to deal with any surprises.
